Aroma Cafe

Project - Aroma Cafe

Based in a small town with a huge student population, the idea of this café was to introduce ‘chilling in the evenings’ concept to the crowd. Since the area was considerably small, spacing of zones were researched and designed where every inch has justified its purpose. Customisable furniture, multi coloured lacquered glass panes and strong distinctive walnut veneer panelling are the design highlights of this space.

Traditionally, decorative art such as a painting/sculpture or simply a flower vase are used to enhance the ambience. However, with space constraints, it made us ponder what is more important: functionality or aesthetics.

So the question that simply arose for us was ‘why create a space specifically for decorative art when you can make your furniture as art?’

The inspiration for the furniture was stereotomy: the art of cutting three-dimensional solids into particular shapes. Assuming a solid block of wood and what box shape forms we could make from it, we designed a table top, cushion seats with wheels and an elongated single leg bar counter. To make space affordability more purposeful, the seating was given flexibility by recessing it under the table top.

The brown of the walnut veneer contrasting with the tile flooring and the textured lime green wallpaper, the elongated coffee bar counter with its pendant lights added the perfect drama for an engaging space. This café was based on space utilisation at its best and we achieved it making use of every inch available.

Material Features: Walnut veneer coated with matte finish, Custom cut Lacquered Glass in different colours, Textured wallpaper.
